Halal Logistics

The Muslim world has its own legal framework which regulates religious activities and practices under the legal protection of the Spanish Constitution. The Halal Food and Quality guarantee mark, endorsed by CIVU, a member of the Spanish Islamic Commission, was created to ensure compliance with these laws and to monitor and certify that approved foods, products and services comply with standards.

In order to understand the importance of Tiba having been given halal certification, it is important to understand the meaning of halal in the Muslim world.

Halal means lawful, permitted, beneficial, healthy, promoting a better quality of life and avoiding risks to health.

  • Food should not contain elements which are forbidden under Islamic law, nor should it come into contact with other forbidden foods during preparation, transportation or storage. Animals which are either destined for direct consumption or for making manufactured products should be slaughtered and butchered according to Islamic precepts.
  • Pharmacy, perfumery, cosmetic, personal and industrial hygiene products, some of which should not contain forbidden substances, such as alcohol in some cases, or animal fat, especially pork fat.
  • Banking services should be free from the type of interest known as riba (usury) as this represents financial gains being made without any effort or work being involved.
  • Services are tailored to the Muslim culture in terms of restaurants, accommodation, sanitation, prayer rooms, rugs, orientation towards Mecca, etc.
  • Cities have hotels, restaurants, shops, tourist services, etc. that are consistent with Islamic law.

Haram refers to all things that are considered unlawful or that are forbidden by Islam as they are understood to be damaging, detrimental, abusive or harmful.

  • Meats and by-products from animals that have died, i.e. they have not been slaughtered.
  • Animal ingredients from stock that has not been slaughtered using halal methods.
  • Blood.
  • Pork, boar and their by-products.
  • Animals slaughtered in a name other than that of Allah.
  • Poultry and animals with tusks and/or claws.
  • Alcohol, poisonous or harmful substances and toxic plants and drinks.
  • Some additives.
  • Manufactured products exposed to cross contamination.
  • Riba bank interest.
  • Gambling.
  • Pornography.

The term mashbooh is used when it is difficult or impossible to know whether certain goods and services are permitted, particularly where the origin of a product or ingredient is not known or, in the case of animals, when the method of slaughter cannot be determined.

TIBA is the first Spanish logistics operator to gain Halal Food and Quality Certification.

Halal certification allows exporters and importers to be certain that we know the rules and particularities of the Islamic culture and that we offer solutions and pay particular attention to ensuring that the logistics processes are 100% halal.

We have trained, specialist staff to guarantee halal transport by air, sea or land whether by full container load or groupage.

We know how important it is that halal products are not contaminated, that they do not come into contact with haram products, which is why we take care of all key aspects to protect the halal cargo throughout the entire logistics chain.

Aspects to consider in halal logistics

The customer should become accredited as a certified halal company.

The products or services covered should carry the corresponding Halal Institute Certificate for the particular batch, product or service, whether they are sold nationally, in the EU or exported outside the EU.

We are committed to working with approved carriers who are aware of the particular requirements and hygiene practices necessary in the handling of halal produce from the place of origin to its destination, such as the use of gloves under all circumstances, and the use of air bags and panels to separate goods in containers.

The documentation (Shipping instructions, CMR, etc.) provided to the shipping line, airline or haulage company responsible for the transportation of the goods shall specify that the products are halal and shall include instructions for their correct handling.

We can offer temperature-controlled product storage and handling services for import/export operations in state-of-the-art warehouses for both frozen and chilled products.

In order to avoid cross contamination, we offer physical separation in our warehouses in areas specifically set aside for halal products.

Our customs team ensures in situ that halal produce is not contaminated and that gloves are always worn during customs inspections.

We have a network of agents in the countries of destination who are trained and qualified to handle halal goods.

The fact that the goods being transported are halal is also reflected in our goods transport insurance policies.

Therefore, we have made, among others, the following commitments:

    • Ensuring, when needed, compliance of requisites set in HALAL rules for the logistical management of HALAL certified goods.
    • Training and making properly awareness to all employees who could take part in the logistical management of HALAL certified goods.
    • Creating a position of an inner HALAL Quality Representative, who will set the responsibilities of each member of the company on compliance of HALAL rules.
    • Taking all the needed actions in order for this HALAL compromise to be spread and complied within all the areas of the company, keep it updated, and be useful any time as a management tool.

  • Supplier approval

Besides, we have set a defined process of supplier approval which consists of:E

    • Educating the supplier with regard to halal certification.
    • Ascertaining whether the supplier has an understanding of halal culture and characteristics.
    • Understanding how the supplier can ensure halal traceability.
    • If the supplier does not have the appropriate knowledge, we provide them with documentation containing information, recommendations and good practices for handling this type of product.

The halal lifestyle has transcended religious boundaries and is beginning to be seen as a way of life that is healthy, sustainable and good quality. The term halal does not only refer to food standards, it also relates to personal care, behaviour, a way of doing, dressing and speaking. Meat is not the only halal product. There are also halal cosmetics, luxury goods, Muslim friendly tourism, hotels, etc.

Many countries which are not necessarily Muslim, particularly in the Far East, are beginning to consume all types of halal products on a regular basis because they are generally subject to stricter controls and are considered to be more hygienic, healthy and natural.

Perishable goods

The most imported and exported halal products are those destined for human consumption, particularly meat.

Our perishable goods division specialises in the transportation of products for human consumption. We apply all of our experience and knowledge of perishable goods logistics to the export and import of your halal food.

In the Islamic religion, the standards applied to permitted foods are also applied to hygiene and beauty products such as creams, make-up, perfumes, etc., some of which should be free from forbidden substances, such as alcohol, in some cases, and from animal fat, especially pork fat or its by-products.

At TIBA, our Health Division, which specialises in pharmaceutical and medical logistics and in importing cosmetics, offers our customers its experience in this industry for importing halal personal care products.

The growth in Islamic tourism, and the high purchasing power that comes with it, has caused some hotels to adapt its practices to offer specific services to this emerging group. Our experienced Hotel Division helps our clients to supply these hotels that have halal certification so they can adapt their facilities to offer their customers not only a menu that complies with Islamic precepts but also prayer rugs, prayer room furnishings, halal amenities and hygiene products.

Our Hotel Logistics Division applies the necessary procedures to ensure a 100% halal service.
