Logistics for the energy sector in Cuba
Transporting a power transformer from Santiago de Cuba to Cienfuegos.
Our Project Cargo team handled the transport of an 80 tonnes and five metre long power transformer, from Santiago de Cuba to Cienfuegos, with the aim of placing it in one of the country´s thermoelectric power stations to contribute to the reestablishment of energy, which has forced electricity cuts in several occasions due to supply limitations.
Thus, in support of the Cuban government, our unit specialized in energy sector logistics, coordinated the necessary manoeuvres for the urgent transportation of this transformer through the 580 kilometres of motorways that separate the two cities.
This project was executed only a month after the execution of the largest over-dimensional cargo ground transport project ever made in the island.
Energy sector logistics in Cuba
On 26th January, Cuba declared a state of emergency in response to faults in the electrical service. Such faults originated in two thermoelectric power stations and the maintenance services scheduled for certain units are causing power cuts that our specialized team in energy sector logistics attempts to solve by transporting the aforementioned power transformer.
The Electrical Union of Cuba (known by its Spanish Acronym, UNE), published the scheduled power cuts to counter the energy deficit faced by the country. It is not the first time that the Cuban government adopts restrictive measures for power use due to the critical situation faced by the Cuban energy sector.
The age of Cuban electrical infrastructure is causing numerous power supply difficulties for the island´s populations, who have already experienced scheduled power cuts in the summer, which serves as proof that the future of energy in Cuba is linked to the development of renewable energy projects.
